Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

Deuteronomy 7:6-11/Ps. 103:1-2,3-4/John 4:7-16/Matthew 11:25-30

The Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus reminds us that God’s love is not passive it searches, pursues, and saves.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus presents God as the shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to seek the one lost sheep. He refuses to give up until the lost is found. This image has helped generations of children preparing for First Confession understand that God’s mercy is always greater than our failures.

Jesus did not simply wait for people to come to Him. He went in search of them. He shared meals with tax collectors and sinners, drawing criticism from the scribes and Pharisees who could not understand such radical compassion. Yet, through these actions, Jesus revealed the true heart of God: a Father who actively seeks His children.

God has reached out to us in Jesus and continues to reach out through the Holy Spirit. His love is dynamic, life-giving, and constantly at work for our good. As St. Paul reminds us, this love “has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.”

The Sacred Heart celebrates this relentless love of God a love that keeps knocking at the doors of our lives, calling us by name, asking as He did in Eden, “Where are you?”

Perhaps the challenge of this feast is not whether God is looking for us, but whether we allow ourselves to be found. May we become still enough to let Christ catch up with us, embrace us with His mercy, and lead us, like the Good Shepherd of the Psalm, beside restful waters to restore our weary souls.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, burning with love for us, make our hearts like unto Thine.
