First Pastoral visit of the Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana H.E Julien Kabore in the Catholic Diocese of Damongo, Savannah – Region, Ghana
The Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, His Excellency, Most Rev. Julien Kabore, led the Catholic faithful in a spirit – filled celebration of the Solemnity of Christ the King on the last Sunday of the liturgical year in the Martyrs of Uganda parish, Bole. The event, which coincided with the Diocese’s annual youth jamboree, brought together young Catholics from various corners of the diocese. The theme for the celebration was “Those who hope in the Lord will run and not be weary” (Isaiah 40:31).
The Nuncio addressed the congregation. He expressed gratitude to the young people for their enthusiasm. He also appreciated the unity they exhibited during the gathering. He also thanked them for their warm welcome, acknowledging the efforts of the parish in organizing the celebration.
The Nuncio emphasized the significance of the Solemnity of Christ the King. This feast was instituted nearly a century ago in 1925. Pope Pius XI established it through the encyclical Quas Primas. He highlighted the historical context of the celebration. He explained how it was introduced to remind Christians of Christ’s reign. This occasion aims to strengthen their faith, charity, and commitment to God.
This celebration came just days after Bishop Angkyier hosted the Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, His Excellency, Most Rev. Julien Kabore, during his five-day first pastoral visit to the Catholic diocese of Damongo. The Nuncio’s presence further strengthened the unity and faith of the Diocese. It marked a significant moment of spiritual renewal. This visit provided encouragement for the Catholic faithful.
The Apostolic Nuncio explained the feast of Christ the King calls for reflection. It is a time to consider three central aspects of Christ’s kingship. These are his victory over evil, his triumph over the world, and his role in setting humanity free from sin. He reminded the congregation that Jesus Christ reigns as King. He delivers humanity from evil. His ultimate sacrifice on the cross demonstrates this. Drawing from scripture.
He also urged youth to remember that Christ’s kingdom is not of this world. It opposes the forces of darkness. This kingdom brings salvation and hope to believers.
The Nuncio also underscored the liberating nature of Christ’s kingship. He noted that Jesus leads by example, embodying humility and service rather than earthly power. Unlike worldly rulers, Christ’s authority stems from truth and love, which free believers from sin and the trappings of materialism. He said “Jesus does not dominate but serves; he is a King for others,”. He continued by calling on the youth to emulate Christ by pursuing lives of service, truth, and integrity.
The Nuncio led the congregation in prayer, emphasizing the need for unity, reconciliation, and commitment to a life of holiness. His message sunk deeply in the hearts of the youth and the parishioners. It left them inspired to uphold the values of truth, faith, and service. They continue their spiritual journey under the kingship of Christ.
Most Rev. Peter Paul Yelezoume Angkyier is the Bishop of the diocese. He announced the next host parish for next year’s Christ the King Feast for the youth jamboree. He cautioned the youth and parishioners against spiritual worldliness. He urged the faithful to avoid the temptation of seeking applause. Personal glory should not come at the expense of their Christian commitment. He emphasized the importance of sincerity in faith.
He said, “When Jesus reigns in the heart, he frees it from hypocrisy, duplicity, and fear.” He called on the youth to stay steadfast in their allegiance to Christ. They should embrace the freedom and dignity that come from living under his kingship.
The liturgical celebration was marked by vibrant expressions of faith. Cultural performances reflected the deep spirituality and enthusiasm of the Catholic youth of Diocese. The annual youth gathering and celebration of the Solemnity of Christ the King showcased the vibrant faith of the Diocese. It also reinforced the critical role of young people in advancing the mission of the Church.
During this celebration, the Apostolic Nuncio, His Excellency, Most Rev Julien Kabore, conferred the Sacrament of confirmation. He conferred it on twenty-nine candidates of the Martyrs of Ugandan parish in Bole.
