ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR B
Ezekiel 17:22-24/Psalm 91:2-3,13-16/2Cor.5:6-10/Mark 4:26-34
Jesus is assuring us in that parable that the Kingdom of God is present in the good and loving choices we make, in our small acts of self – giving of others.
Then in the other parable, Jesus seems to be saying that God can be working quietly, mysteriously and yet powerfully, at the heart of the familiar.
The farmer sows the seed and then does nothing for months, and, yet, there is a wonderful process of growth going on all the time, until he is ready to reap the harvest. Jesus is saying that when we sow seeds of hope and love, more is always happening than we realize; God is at work there.
The coming of God’s kingdom into the world is primarily God’s work. We have a role to play; we have to sow the seed. If we do that, if we are big in small things, God will exploit that opening in ways beyond all our imagining. God will be working away powerfully through our efforts, as small as they may seem to us.
Like St. Francis Xavier one sayings, “Be big in little things” this invites us to do a deeper reflection, and one of the ways is that we do the small, ordinary, tasks of life with a loving and generous heart. Let us do our task with an extra ordinary love for the Lord in our heart.
It is important to note that the “Kingdom of God” deals with the realm of salvation: how we get saved, how we grow spiritually, and where we are ultimately headed as believers. It deals with how God saved you from the penalty of sin, is saving you from the power of sin, and will save you from the presence of sin. It also deals with God’s reign and authority.
In life, you would go through valleys and mountains. However, in those dark days of the valley, the Word equips you not to doubt what God has taught you in the light. That is a gift for children of His Kingdom.
Never despise a small beginning. God gives the power of the Holy Spirit to work faith and righteousness in His chosen people.
It is the mighty power by which He raised Jesus from the dead. That same power can work in us to produce fruits. The power is great and significant, but it starts small, like a mustard seed.
Beloved in Christ, everyday choices to scatter the seed of the Lord’s Love will unleash a power of that can transform the world.
Happy Father’s Day to all Fathers.
