Romans. 1 : 1 – 7/ Psalm. 97 : 1 – 4 / Luke 11 : 29 – 32

In our Gospel passage today, we hear of the words of the Lord telling His people, mentioning Jonah and the Queen of the Sheba, and highlighting His frustrations at them, at how many of them still refused to believe despite having received and witnessed many proofs and signs of His truth, wisdom and greatness.

The Lord Jesus has performed many miracles and wonders, despite seeing these wonders and signs being performed before their very own eyes; and having heard of the words of wisdom and truth being spoken right before their very own eyes, they still failed to believe and even doubted Him, demanding that He gave them signs and proofs of His authenticity and authority.

Jesus reminds his hearers that, the people of Nineveh took the prophet Jonah seriously and the Queen of Sheba took Solomon seriously. Yet, Jesus’ own contemporaries do not take him seriously, even though, as Jesus says, ‘there is something greater than Solomon here…

Beloved in Christ, the gospel reading challenges us never to take the wonders of our faith for granted. In looking for some striking, spectacular signs from Jesus, many of his contemporaries were missing the signs that were staring them in the face. In looking for the extraordinary, we too can miss the richness in the ordinary.

Jesus says, the signs of God’s presence are to be found here in the ordinary stuff of life, for those who have eyes to see. Brethren, the Lord is present to us in very ordinary ways. He is alive where people are cared for and looked after, where the broken are healed, where the lonely are given companionship, where the spiritually and physically hungry are fed, where love endures even in the face of suffering and loss.

Lastly, He is present among us, in the community of believers, in his word and in the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Let us, renew our faith in the Lord, and strive so that we will always be ever more aware of the Lord’s presence among us, in our works, actions and way of life, in our every interaction with one another. Let us pray for the eyes to see the many signs of the Lord’s presence in our day to day lives.  May the Lord continue to guide us in our journey of faith throughout our lives, bless us in our every good works, efforts and endeavour.
